Utah Symphony: Do You Hear the People Sing?

Although Andrew Lloyd Webber became a household name for creating two of the most successful musical-theater productions ever with Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, he got a run for his pop-culture ubiquity in the French duo of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg.

Sure, their names don’t roll off the tongue quite as easily. But the pair—Schönberg as composer and Boublil as lyricist—is responsible for a number of Webber’s biggest challengers to the title of contemporary Broadway legends. The Utah Symphony will be joined by Broadway stars (like Terrence Mann) and the Utah Symphony Chorus to re-create all the stage grandeur of classic selections from the duet’s greatest works, such as Les Misérables (1980), Miss Saigon (1989), Martin Guerre (1996) and The Pirate Queen (2006). The symphony will also perform lesser-known pieces, like songs that never made it to stage, and the duo’s first collaboration, the celebrated 1973 French rock opera La Révolution Française.
