Hale Center Theater: The Civil War

Directed by Neal C. Johnson, The Civil War is a musical account of the emotional landscape during what can be considered one of our nation’s greatest tragedies. Drawing on letters, diaries, and firsthand accounts, as well as the words of Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass and Walt Whitman, The Civil War explores the experiences of the soldiers and leaders who fought for their beliefs. The musical also examines the lives of those the men left behind, as well as the hopes and fears of the slaves whose freedom was at stake.

The Hale Center Theater creative team produces an untraditional ‘thematic' event of this Tony Awards nominated musical, bringing to the stage a distinct American voice with an emphasis on traditional storytelling. The Civil War is structured on expressing feeling rather than a conventional narrative, borrowing techniques from rock, concert performances, oratorios, and song cycles to bring a human face to this historic event.
