Larsen received a PhD from the University of Houston and has taught literature at BYU since 1993, where he currently serves as associate chair. His work has appeared in places such as Georgia Review, Southern Review, Ploughshares, Poetry, River Styx, Orion, The Pushcart Prize Anthology, Best American Poetry 2009, Poetry Daily and others.
The Utah Poet Laureate program began in 1997 which appoints a spokesperson to conduct readings and public events around the state in libraries, universities and schools.
