Free Energy, The Devil Whale

You can thank BringTheGig.com—a local website that serves as a platform to crowdfund concerts—and, especially, those pop-rock fans who pledged to support this show in advance, for bringing Free Energy (and local faves The Devil Whale) to The State Room. The start-up website has previously helped crowdfund First Big Fight and Jonathan Coulton concerts. This is their best yet. With a Midwestern aesthetic informed by pop radio and, later, punk and indie rock—“I had the same kind of unabashed love for Phil Collins as I did for Pavement,” says vocalist Paul Sprangers—Free Energy offers a unique sonic palette, filled with power riffs and clear, well-crafted, hook-laden sing-alongs. Their debut, Stuck on Nothing, dropped on neo-disco specialists DFA Records (Yacht, The Rapture and LCD Soundsystem), while their sophomore record, Love Sign (2013), comes out on their own imprint, showing them really owning what they love: pop music.
