Otep

Otep Shamaya says that her band’s music is “formed from the marrow of creative intercourse. Art of art’s sake. Indeed.” Genre-busting band Otep fuses rock, punk, metal, hip-hop, spoken word, jazz and classic rock (but is overtly metal) to create a sonic backdrop for Shamaya’s thoughtful lyrics. The poet, illustrator, author and activist dropped Otep’s final record, Hydra, in January, which is a concept album based around Shamaya’s graphic novel two years in the making. It’s about a girl corrupted by the world, ripped away from the “golden, molten elixir of creativity” and abandoned on a barbaric island. It’s a story of “her personal alchemy of Theophagy, revenge and righteousness.”
