Umphrey's McGee

What do Rick Ross, Elijah Wood, Sheamus, Sarah McLachlan, Alan Alda and Umphrey’s McGee all have in common? They all love toast. Actually, I made that up, but I’m sure I’m right—everyone loves toast. Well, all of them were born on Jan. 28 (Aquarians!). On this tour, Umphreaks can help Umphrey’s McGee blow out the candles in celebration of 15 glorious years of progressive jamming, no-holds-barred improvising, genre converging, etc. The Chicago-based six-piece has played more than 1,500 official shows—not counting their prestigious spot singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” at Wrigley Field in 2012—which have ranged from cruise ships to sUMmer school, the music-festival-cum-hands-on-experience they launched. That takes them from dive bars to venues with screens displaying fans’ text messages suggesting what the band should improv. In the jam-band scene, they are unparalleled in their touch-football skills, they told ESPN, and not many other bands can touch their musical virtuosity, either.
