Om and Sir Richard Bishop

There’s a hodgepodge of imagery, symbolism and allusion to Christianity, Sufism, Catholicism and Hinduism on Om’s latest album, Advaitic Songs. But abstract and mystical musings are nothing new for Al Cisneros (vocals, bass), who has put out four other dense albums since launching the project in 2003. But the duo’s sound has evolved from sparse, minimal and droning—the essentials for a meditative, hypnotic listen—to include varied instrumentation like tabla, cello and flute on the five songs from this 2012 release, what Pitchfork dubbed “pan-global mystical music for the heavy-metal demographic.” Sir Richard Bishop is also on the bill.
