Utah Chamber Artists Winter Concert

Classical music in general, for many people, exists in a rarified world that doesn’t always seem accessible; chamber music, unfortunately, can seem even more so. Yet the Utah Chamber Artists choir and orchestra provide regular opportunities to bring these beautiful, intimate musical works to local audiences—and to show that chamber music doesn’t only belong to the distant past.

The company’s winter program does include several works by Mendelssohn, including Psalm 114 and Psalm 115, and the Hebrides Overture, Op. 26 (Fingal’s Cave). Conductor Barlow Bradford has chosen, in addition, contemporary compositions for chamber orchestra and chorus, representing composers from Minnesota. Abbie Betinis’ “Envoi” (from Songs of Smaller Creatures), Stephen Paulus’ “Pilgrims’ Hymn” and Timothy Takach’s “As the Sunflower Turns on Her God” help remind listeners that this art form can still be vital in the 21st century.
