Hale Center Theater Presents: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Ian Fleming is, of course, legendary as the creator of the most celebrated fictional figure in international espionage, James Bond. But Fleming branched out from his tales of the he-man hero for something fairly different: a posthumously published illustrated children’s book about an inventor and a magical flying car.

The 2002 stage version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang takes much of its material from the loosely adapted 1968 film version, which featured original songs—including the Oscar-nominated title song—by the famous Sherman brothers writing team, who contributed to Disney classics like Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book. The story, set in the 1910s, follows the adventures of an eccentric widowed inventor named Caractacus Potts and his two children as they try to protect their unique flying machine from the cruel baron of Vulgaria. Hale Centre Theatre’s always-impressive technical team will have you believing a “fine four-fendered friend” can fly. (Scott Renshaw)
