Matt Wilson Arts & Crafts Band

The Matt Wilson ice scraper—included with the jazzbo’s 2003 Palmetto Records release, Humidity—might be the best album swag, ever. It’s useful, yes, but the irony is classic Wilson, the witty drummer whose live shows have the feel of one part comedy show, one part classic jazz and one part boundary-pushing music making. Wilson has recorded 250 albums as a sideman and nine under his name, including the Arts & Crafts Band (Terell Stafford on trumpet and flugelhorn; Gary Versace on piano, Hammond organ and accordion; and Martin Wind on bass). The band was assembled originally for a 5 1/2-week recording session to work out new instrumentation beyond Wilson’s typical quartet and to “record tunes I had stored in my ‘want to record someday’ file,” Wilson says. It’s fresh and upbeat.
