When I was in college, I bought a bass. Rather than taking lessons or playing off of tabs, I thought it best to buy an instructional video—a VHS called Super Bass Solo Technique: Victor Wooten. I learned nothing. But it was sure was fun to watch the bass master wail in ways more advanced than most mortals could ever imagine. The five-time Grammy-award-winning musician—best known for holding down the low end with Béla Fleck & the Flecktones—is touring in support of two freshly released albums. Words & Tones features a bevy of female vocalists crooning over Wooten’s original compositions, while Sword & Stone offers up many of the same tracks but in instrumental versions, showcasing new interpretations and guest musicians. Wooten is certainly more mind-blowing in concert than on VHS—and without the need for auto-rewind.
