Kishi Bashi, Plume Giant

I can think of few albums in the past two years that have an opening track as enticing as Kishi Bashi’s 2012 release, 151a. “Intro/ Pathos, Pathos” starts gently with sweeping, angelic strings and minimal synths notes and builds to something epic and so sweet that you’ll get a sugar rush. The rest of the album’s eight tracks—including standout single “Bright Whites,” “I Am the Antichrist to You” and “It All Began With a Burst”—vary as well, yet the avant-pop composer’s grip on the listener never wanes. Bashi, with his weird, evocative sensibility—fittingly, he’s backed and recorded with such acts as of Montreal, Regina Spektor and Sondre Lerche—wrote the album himself. In concert, however, he employs looper pedals and a talented backup band. Plume Giant opens the show.
