Mickey Hart Band, The African Showboyz

Mickey Hart—most notorious for his rhythmic contributions to the Grateful Dead—owns thousands of percussive devices, and they’ve never been all in one place because of sheer volume. While perhaps out of control as a collector, Hart loves every one for its unique sonic coloring and feeling, from American handcrafted snares to jungle drums. But technology has changed all of that. “The tool of the future” is Hart’s Random Access Musical Universe, or RAMU, a playable electronic encyclopedia of sounds that he’s cataloged since the ’70s. Each sound is now at the percussion master’s fingertips. Similarly, Hart has met a bevy of talented musician friends over the years—and we’re sure he’d want to bring them all with him on tour. But he’s pared down the current Mickey Hart Band lineup to some of the finest players around, including Widespread Panic’s Dave Schools (bass); Sikiru Adepoju, the man whom Mickey Hart calls “the Mozart of the talking drum”; intoxicating vocalist Crystal Monee Hale and many more. The African Showboyz will start things off.
