Carlos Mencia

It’s hard to become a household name when you’re a standup comedian. It usually takes many years on the road, a half-hour television series named after you and a couple of movies featuring some kind of watered-down version of what made you funny in the first place.

Funny guy Carlos Mencia has done all of that. Honduras-born and Los Angeles-projects raised, Mencia was the 17th of 18 children. But from the moment he started doing open-mic nights fresh out of high school, he was able to make people double over laughing with a no-holds-barred approach to race, sex, gender and simplified politics. Mencia’s uncouth style has often turned him into a ripe target for criticism, and his reputation for allegedly stealing jokes from other comedians has turned him into a regular punching bag for his colleagues. Recently, perhaps to get back to his roots, he’s been busy entertaining troops in the Middle East and returning to small stages in comedy clubs nationwide. (Jacob Stringer)$25
