Kasie West: Pivot Point

Young-adult fiction is often filled with supernatural and fantastical themes, the teen protagonists contending with extraordinary events as allegories for coming of age. First-time novelist Kasie West brings us another adolescent with unusual abilities in Pivot Point, and uses those abilities to explore the complexities of facing a seemingly impossible choice.

Her protagonist, Addison Coleman, is a high-schooler in a world where those with unique talents live apart from normal humans. Her own ability allows her to look several weeks into the future to see each possible outcome branching off from a decisive moment—and she faces just such a moment herself when her parents tell her they’re divorcing and she needs to choose between living with her father among the “Norms” or continuing in the familiar life she knows with her mother. Which future will Addison choose—and will she discover whether it’s possible to make a choice that’s “safe”? (Scott Renshaw)
