On April 20, SLC Nerd 2013 gives freaks, geeks, dweebs and dorks their own pride parade—er, convention. The daylong event opens at 9 a.m. and features a veritable smorgasbord of stuff that would never, ever get you laid. That is, until nerd culture became sexy. (Too late for some of us.)
Open gaming of the board and video variety—provided by Epic Puzzles & Games and vintage-video-game hangout Atomic Arcade—starts at 10 a.m. Throughout the day, those who can abandon screens and pewter figurines can enjoy a variety of other offerings. Geeky merchants will offer their wares—don’t touch!—and artists will sell for charity and profit at expo booths. Good little dweeblings will listen to VoxNerd speakers give edifying and titillating presentations like Cosplay on a Shoestring and Imperial Espionage in the Context of the Galactic Civil War. Speaking of cosplay—that’s a portmanteau of “costume” and, uh, “play”—and titillation, there’s a chance of cheesecake (read: hot chicks in killer costumes) at the Masquerade Brawl. Imagination—a nerd’s greatest asset—gets the spotlight with The Pick-a-Path Musical by Tasha Joan and Tracy Hickman.
Capping things off is a performance by Wasasquatch—the Bigfoot Rock & Roll Experience. Blending urban legend, Chuck E. Cheese and cover tunes, these rock & roll animals will crush your skull. God, I hope they sign plaster footprints after the show. I have a first-run, limited-edition repaint, and that’d really up the value. (Randy Harward)$10
