Ushio Shinohara: Boxing Painter

The Central Utah Art Center will present “Ushio Shinohara: Boxing Painter,” an exhibit and live performance by Ushio Shinohara. The piece will correspond with the premier of a documentary film about 81 year old Ushio and his wife Noriko at Sundance Film Festival this year called “Cutie and the Boxer.” CUAC Several large paintings, a variety of drawings, three sculptures, and a live boxing painting performance by Shinohara will be a part of the show.

Shinohara was an important part of the Neo-Dad movement in Japan in the 1950’s. Although Shinohara has lived in New York City for over 40 years his work mainly focuses on the invasion of Western culture into Japan after World War II. His style engages with principles of Action Painting and also with pop art. Shinohara is currently in a group exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, has a feature article in the November 2012 issue of Art Forum and is on the December 2012 cover of Art News.

The gallery stroll public reception for the show will be on Friday January 18th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
