Sea Wolf, The Devil Whale, Pentagraham Crackers

While movies and film scores are on our minds this week, it’s hard not to think about the cinematic gravity of Sea Wolf’s lushly orchestrated pop-rock. Led by singer/songwriter Alex Brown Church, the band released its third album, Old World Romance, in September 2012. The album’s sweeping, swooning songs show Church tackling the themes of geography, relationships and the weight of life. On the first single, “Old Friend,” for instance, Church, who recorded the album at his home studio in California, uses a minimalist drum rhythm alongside perfectly synced acoustic plucking to give this heart-tugger about confronting reality a film-score-like home. Sea Wolf will also perform at Sundance ASCAP Music Cafe this week. Local bands The Devil Whale and Pentagraham Crackers open the show.
