Head for the Hills, Salem

There’s something in the water east across the state line. Colorado just legalized marijuana, they have, arguably, the best high-octane beer in the country, and they grow fine bluegrass bands. There are bands that can ramble on and jam (The String Cheese Incident and Yonder Mountain String Band), but also ones that are fiery and precise, like Head for the Hills, voted Best Bluegrass Band in the Westword Music Showcase Awards from 2010 to 2012. Following up after the Drew Emmitt-produced (Leftover Salmon) self-titled album in 2010, the four-piece released Head for the Hills Live in 2012, which showcases their raw, unadorned performances, captured at a five-night run in Colorado for their home audience. With 16 tracks of originals and covers, it’s raw, fiery and ecstatic—what modern bluegrass should be. Salem is also on the bill.
