Joshua James, Jay William Henderson

This singer-songwriter and Northplatte Records co-owner pens songs about the ecclesiastical and searching for beatitude, on his couch at his American Fork homestead, Willamette Mountain. The homestead’s name has several meanings: it’s where he grows veggies and raises chickens (he writes about that on his blog, WillametteMountain.tumblr.com), and it’s also his personal spiritual epicenter. The 11 warm, twangy folk-rock songs on his 2012 release, From the Top of Willamette Mountain, are thematic in their collective searching, with many songs written as half-autobiographical characters. In the video for “Queen of the City,” one character has dark fetishes, which has struck a chord with audiences. It competed on MTV-U’s The Freshman with four other videos in December 2012 to get in rotation; it dominated with more than 30,000 votes. Jay William Henderson provides support.
