There’s an old press photo of DJ Z-Trip (born Zach Sciacca) snuggling in bed with his mixer. I also like to think that he sleeps with a radio scanner that plays all manner of music, which he soaks up via osmosis while he gets his Zs. The inventor of the mashup doesn’t skip a beat as he splices together, for example, ’90s hip-hop with Deep Purple—in fact, no genre is safe from his rapid-fire twists and turns. While this launched him as a worldwide DJ to be reckoned with, Z-Trip is expanding his palette, like on the mashup-free funky-break production on the mixtape he collaborated on with Talib Kweli, Attack the Block. The DJ hasn’t lost a step in well over a decade—if anything, he’s picked up the pace. DJ Dolph will open the show.
