Egyptian Theater: A Christmas Carol on the Air

You can’t escape Ebenezer Scrooge. Don’t even try. His nightcap-topped face peers at you from ads and billboards throughout the month of December, and no matter how much you might humbug the whole thing, he’ll still be there. Dare you hope that there’s a new way to see this most familiar of holiday tales?

Utah Shakespeare Festival brought us a different spin in 2004, with its founder, Fred Adams, in the Scrooge role of the Peter Sham/Brad Carroll play A Christmas Carol on the Air. A somewhat “meta” interpretation of the well-known narrative, it tells of Chick and Stu Wright, brothers whose traveling dramatic company has made a stop to perform a radio version of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. But Chick may be feeling somewhat humbug-gy himself, and family ties may not be enough to prevent tension during the production as a result. Can a strange visitor help Chick learn the true meaning of Christmas, just as it did for old Ebenezer? (Scott Renshaw)
