Salt Lake Arts Hub: Connect

On the second Friday of each month, the nonprofit Utah Arts Alliance hosts Connect, a showcase of local art in which local artists can present up to three pieces and receive constructive feedback, in addition to listening to lectures given by more advanced artists. The event provides a regular opportunity for local artists to pursue the essential art of networking.

The final Connect meeting of the year features the awarding of a total of $2,000 in grants to three winners voted on by attendees throughout the year. There will also be a silent auction for works by artists who placed first through third in monthly voting, including photographers Cat Palmer and Chris Madsen (“Swarm” is pictured), multimedia artist Blake Palmer, and painters Logan Madsen and Jimmi Toro.

This is the second year for Connect, and the Utah Arts Alliance—founded in 2003 by Derek Dyer—has seen sizable growth since the event’s inception. Earlier this year, the alliance relocated to a huge new building, dubbed the Salt Lake Arts Hub, with artists’ studios, offices, performance spaces and a gallery space, in addition to their Main Street gallery. The new building is a fitting home for the nonprofit’s multifaceted goals of supporting local arts in many different genres, activities and demographic niches.

Throughout the year, Connect is a free event, but the organization is asking $10 to help fund the grant program. The year’s concluding Connect will include a musical performance by local band Theta Naught. (Brian Staker)
