Utopia Early Music: Heaven to Earth

With tinny Christmas tunes blaring out of speakers everywhere—wearing down your soul rather than fueling yuletide fires—wouldn’t it be nice to actually enjoy some traditional holiday sounds? That’s precisely the aim of Utopia Early Music, with their program Heaven to Earth: A German Baroque Christmas. A gathering of 10 musicians will transport the audience back to a dark and wintry Germany, with pieces from the likes of Johann Sebastian Bach and several of his contemporaries, such as Dietrich Buxtehude, Samuel Scheidt, Johann Hermann Schein and Heinrich Schultz. Featuring a vocal quintet augmented by a couple of violists, an organ and a viola da gamba—a 15th-century instrument played with a bow but tuned and fretted closer to a lute than a violin—this historically informed performance should help to settle those jingle-bell-frayed nerves and immerse you in feelings of a truly Fröhliche Weihnachten.
