Lots of publicity photos, many cliched, from touring musicians cross City Weekly’s music desk, but few are as perfect as that of proud Texan and renaissance man Kinky Friedman: a black & white shot of a stone-cold glare from a grizzled face smoking a fat, chewed-up cigar. More than likely, that ’gar is one of Friedman’s own Kinkycristos; he couldn’t find an affordable alternative to the Cubans he adores, so, in 2007, he started his own company. Friedman has many reasons to smoke a celebratory stogie: a new book penned with Willie Nelson; a new live solo album, Live From Woodstock; a new libation, Man in Black Tequila; and, of course, his illustrious career of music, satire, humor and writing. Basically, if you’re Kinky Friedman, any time is a good time to smoke a cigar.
