Matthew E. White

Love, death, seeking, transcendence—all subjects covered by any gospel album worth its salt. Matthew E. White uses such themes on his debut album, Big Inner, and as with quality gospel music, it turns the path to mortality into an ecstatic dance. White, an accomplished jazz arranger and guitarist, leads his house band, Spacebomb, on a seven-song tour de force—equipped with a seven-person choir, brass ensemble and strings, to boot—that pays homage to White’s idols, including Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint, Jorge Ben and Washington Phillips. You will be hearing from Spacebomb a lot in the coming year; it’s also the name of his record label, which will offer a colossal series of forthcoming albums from Natalie Prass, Karl Blau, Joe Westerlund (Megafaun) and Ivan Howard (The Rosebuds, Gayngs). Back to Big Inner: There are swinging croons, tingling dirge, ornate overdubs and a soul flavor that reaches out from the Richmond, Va., studio and brings back a little sound from Memphis and New Orleans.
