A Diva Holiday

The word “diva” has gotten a bad rap in recent years, becoming a synonym for stars throwing tantrums and throwing their egos around. But it’s always nice to be reminded of its original derivation and more positive associations: from the Latin term for “goddess,” and a reference to operatic and other popular singers who awed audiences with their talent. The Grant Theatre’s A Diva Holiday aims to connect a Christmastime celebration with the big talents of fabulous women. More than just a presentation of classic holiday songs, it’s also a performance of an original script (by Robin Wilkes-Dunn, Kevin Mathie and Eric Jensen) narrated by Jonathan McBride. But the highlight is bound to be the opportunity to enjoy some of the best local voices—MacKenzie Seiler, Erica Walters, Alicia Washington, Erica Hansen and Detorea Oliver (pictured, left to right)—belting out your Christmas favorites, reminding you of the true, original meaning of “diva.” (Scott Renshaw)
