Broadway Across America: The Addams Family: The Musical

The characters are well known to one generation from a classic television series, and to another generation from two popular theatrical films. But before any of that, there were the darkly comic single-panel works of cartoonist Charles Addams, who created a clan with a penchant for the bizarre.

Those cartoons form part of the inspiration for the 2010 Broadway musical The Addams Family, with a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice (Jersey Boys) and original songs by Andrew Lippa. The plot finds the creepy, ooky family dealing with a dilemma facing so many families: Their little girl is dating someone they consider inappropriate. In the case of Wednesday Addams’ new beau, Lucas, that means he’s—can you imagine?—normal. And when the Addams family invites Lucas’ family over for dinner, the event is unlikely to go off without a hitch. Prepare to snap your fingers along with the ghoulish fun (Scott Renshaw)
