The Octopus Project

Although I’ve never had the chance to see this Austin, Texas-based indie-electronica act perform live, where they are apparently at their best, a friend who has seen them plenty described them to me as “emotional robots in symphony.” If I may extrapolate, it’s not that they’re motionless music makers, but more like conductors of their synths, Moogs, drum machines, theremins and various other electronic-beat and melody-making equipment. Their fifth album, Hexadecagon 2010, exhibits their ambition, smarts and zeal for the joyous side of music. Its rich and textured eight songs were originally created for a multimedia concert at SXSW in 2010, where The Octopus Project used an eight-channel surround-sound system and eight video projectors to give the audience a bombastic aural experience to go with the high sonic aspirations. Green Arrow and Birthquake open the show.
