Birds of Chicago is a collective spawned from two artists known for being a part of collectives, JT Nero (JT & the Clouds) and Allison Russell (Po’ Girl). The duo conjures up old Memphis soul with pleasant, but not too perfect, harmonies. It is nuanced songwriting—Nero cites Mark Twain and Sam Cooke as influences—with speakeasy charm disguised as folk, drawn out with guitar, banjo, ukulele, clarinet and whistles. These new visionaries in roots music can be heard on their 2012 self-titled release; 12 tracks that are just enough to get you hooked. Sean Hayes headlines, and Awna Teixeira is also on the bill.
