Ben Sollee

For Ben Sollee, a singer-songwriter-cellist from Kentucky, it’s all about an intimate connection. The 29-year-old musician has collaborated widely, yet, despite attention from a major label, decided to release and produce Half-Made Man (2012) on his own—to have a direct relationship with his fans, he says. Sollee garnered a thick Southern following for just that reason; as he toured via bicycle, he would play intimate sets in nontraditional locales. That rawness and real-time performance quality is captured on Half-Made Man. “This is kinetic expression. I dug deep into myself and asked the musicians to go there with me,” Sollee says. “To my ear, it sounds like a musical search party; we often find what we’re looking for in between defined styles and genres.” Although hard to classify, his music is certainly vulnerable and autobiographical. Luke Reynolds opens.
