Milo Greene, Bahamas

I’ve written about the constantly touring up-and-comers Milo Greene several times of late (I like them a lot), so it’s worth focusing some attention on Bahamas, the moniker of Toronto-based guitarist/songwriter Afie Jurvanen. The musician-for-hire has backed up such big names as Feist and Howie Beck, but when he takes center stage, he steals the show. Opening for Noah & the Whale in 2011, Jurvanen, backed by a drummer and two female backup singers (choose your bandmates wisely!), rolled out his M. Ward-esque tunes that have a splash of surf and can juke from jangly rock to pining acoustic ballad with ease. The 2012 release Barchords probably won’t be on any best-of year-end lists, but it should be noted as one of the most underrated albums of the year.
