To understand the meticulous recording tendencies of Pinback, here’s a quote from guitarist/vocalist Rob Crow, on, on using computers and a home studio: “The time it would take to do the kind of records that we do in a real studio with all the real engineers and real producers, it would take billions of dollars and everybody involved would kill themselves having to deal with us.” Side projects, family matters and stolen hard drives with near-finished work were the cause of the five-year gap between the duo’s prior release, Autumn of the Seraphs, and 2012’s Information Retrieved. But every minute of the 10-track LP—filled with stunning, sweeping instrumentation of interlocking melodic parts between Crow and bassist Armistead Burwell Smith IV and evocative stories—is worth the wait.
