Father John Misty

“ ‘It’s all of me and none of me; if you can’t see that, you won’t get it,’ ” Josh Tillman paraphrases author Philip Roth when talking about Father John Misty, Tillman’s new musical nom-de-plume. After leaving Seattle’s Fleet Foxes, where he played drums from 2008 to 2011, Tillman set out to find his voice but instead battled depression and songwriter’s block. He fought through it at a secluded canyon treehouse, wrote a book and eventually demoed songs that would become the collection Fear Fun, Father John Misty’s indelible 2012 release. The album’s lyrical content is dark while being playful, blunt and also mysterious; it pieces together sounds ranging from Waylon Jennings to Arthur Russell and Physical Graffiti to Roy Orbison. Le Sera and Jeferstitties open.
