Typhoon, Laura Gibson, Lost Lander

Hailing from Portland, Ore., Typhoon draws elements from folk and classical music alike—Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Bedrich Smetana—and, of late, is informed lyrically by classic Christian philosophers like Blaise Pascal and Soren Kierkegaard. The near-dozen-member band shows restraint and the output is cinematic—a chord struck on the trailer for the forthcoming White Lighter album, which premiered on IFC on Oct. 15. “I’ve always approached songwriting from a filmic perspective,” Typhoon frontman Kyle Morton told IFC. “In many ways, I consider Typhoon as a running soundtrack to a fictional, cinematic version of my life. This trailer is a short adaptation of what would be the first scene of this ‘cinema.’” Laura Gibson and Lost Lander share the stage.
