Up until 2012’s The Clearing, Bowerbirds’ sound could be classified simply as sparse, rustic folk—never decorative or ornate. But from trials such as bandmate/love partners Phil Moore and Beth Tacular breaking up and getting back together, to Tacular overcoming a serious illness, to the two hand-building a cabin in the North Carolina woods, comes a fresh turn in aesthetic. Additionally, their active decision to simplify life and live in the woods forced them to look inward to find more emotional depth in their songwriting and scan outward for sonic diversity. Overall, The Clearing is a sad album, but is wrapped in a pretty package—one with instrumentation not limited to woodwinds, strings, brass, vibraphone and organ. The polished—yet emotionally murky—product was recorded at April Base, Bon Iver’s cabin-cum-studio in Wisconsin, so it’s no surprise that the album easily compares to Bon Iver, as well as bands Horse Feathers, Lost in the Trees and Great Lake Swimmers. Strand of Oaks and Prypyat share the stage.
