Zion I

On seven previous albums, producer Amp Live and MC Zumbi have dropped cerebral rhymes on top of futuristic, cutting-edge beats. On a casual listen, though, singles like “Juicy Juice” or “Hit ’Em,” to name just two of the many, it’s easy to surmise Zion I just produces rippin’ bangers. But on close listen, Zumbi reaches past his pinpoint precision and technique and digs deep into lyrical terrain untouched by many. That hasn’t stopped for the duo’s eighth album, ShadowBoxing, which dropped Oct. 2. “This is an album about metaphorical kicks and throws at oneself, looking inward at the shadow self and seeking awareness in the darkness of one’s own psyche,” Zumbi says. The album does, however, stray from the live instrumentation of the previous album to a more gritty (dubstep, even, at times), beat-heavy sound. Minnesota, Free the Robots and Inclined are also on the bill.
