Dark Star Orchestra

More than 10 years ago, around the time when Dark Star Orchestra was starting out, fans could request via DSO’s website which particular Grateful Dead set list the tribute band would perform in concert (not note-for-note, but song-for-song). My best concert-going friend, Matt Stevens, and I would request our birthday shows when they’d come to town (there were six Grateful Dead shows played Jan. 22, but none on my exact birthday), and, finally, the band actually played Matt’s Sept. 11 birthday set from West Palm Beach—with its killer second-set starter “Scarlet Begonias” into “Fire on the Mountain.” The days of requesting shows are gone, unfortunately, but each night, Dark Star Orchestra—now surpassing 2,100 total shows played—still re-creates one of the more than 2,300 Grateful Dead shows in a manner authentic to the era and band lineup. The Grateful Dead were always a live band, and Dark Star Orchestra stays true to that band/audience connection—a better tribute band can’t be found.
