Singer-songwriter Aimee Mann’s acting career started in the cult classic The Big Lebowski as the green-nail-polished-little-right-toe-
sacrificing German nihilist. But her role in Portlandia in 2011 as herself, albeit a cleaning
lady, had a more wry, biting and truthful wit about it: The industry is in the pits, so
musicians are forced to work menial jobs, like cleaning Fred and Carrie’s house. At least her likeness wasn’t made into a piñata—like Sarah McLachlan—and beaten to smithereens.
She is, however, her own punching bag, of sorts. For nearly 20 years, the crooner has released emotionally dark and dense material—
t’s a bummer in the best sense. Her latest, Charmer, is no different in context, but this veteran is more acute and poignant than ever. Field Report opens.
