In 2010, 50 Cent almost signed the 31-year-old Danny Brown to his label, G-Unit Records, but opted out because Fitty didn’t like Brown’s pants. You read that correctly: Brown’s jeans were too skinny. Looking back, it would have been an odd fit with Brown at the epicenter of the slowly dying “bling” rap genre. But one year later, the Detroit native finally got his due and signed to the heavily EDM-influenced Fool’s Gold Records. Being the only rapper on a house label also seems strange, but this move produced Brown’s most acclaimed album to date, XXX—which was Spin Magazine’s hip-hop album of the year in 2011. A$AP Rocky and Schoolboy Q are also on the bill. (Colin Wolf)
