Creepy Toy Show

Sometimes the materials for art have the most curious origins. When artists use the toys of their youth, they are drawing upon the time of their earliest artistic impulses. The Creepy Toy Show at Gray Wall Gallery allows a group of artists to explore in new ways the figures, vehicles and play sets that contributed to the growth of their imaginations and helped them become the people they are today.

Artists often have a naturally playful bent, and some of these resulting creations are very bent—a few are downright twisted. What will the toys turn into in the hands of an Adrian Prazen, who in his usual art shapes and reshapes metal sculptures? Other artists displaying their creepy toys are James Rezler, Craig Fisher, Timm Paxton, Tamara Fox, Stephen Pratt and Brittney Johnson.

It almost seems like this show should be at Halloween time, but perhaps it’s a harbinger, as autumn is in the air. (Brian Staker)
