Paul Reiser

The 1990s are considered to be one of the heydays of stand-up comedy, in that comedians were playing to huge crowds in high-end venues, and in turn being offered profitable television deals by Hollywood. Just think of Roseanne Barr, Tim Allen and Jerry Seinfeld, to name a few.

Of course, Paul Reiser is another one of those comedic personalities best-known for a long- running role on a television sitcom—in his case playing opposite Helen Hunt in the award-winning Mad About You. But way before he was charming American audiences in their own living rooms, Reiser had gained notoriety for his stand-up skills that landed him several movie roles, including the corporate slimeball who aimed to smuggle alien eggs inside Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley in 1986’s science-fiction thriller Aliens.

One prominent turn as a nasty villain can hardly touch the jovial and seemingly approachable charm that Reiser has perfectly crafted, especially by penning such best-selling books like Couplehood, Familyhood and, most recently, Babyhood. Not to mention the fact that he also has made several albums with contemporary musician Julia Fordham, the latest being 2010’s Unusual Suspects.

But like many hard-working comedians, Reiser has found time to come full circle, ending up back onstage, holding a mic and telling observational jokes. Now, with so many additional life experiences behind him, he can better laugh with the rest of us about everyday life situations—like the time he had that popular television gig. (Jacob Stringer)
