The Jealous Sound

I interpret A Gentle Reminder’s opening track, “Beautiful Morning,” as alluding to The Jealous Sound’s success in 2003 with the critically acclaimed Kill Them With Kindness, and the hardships that singer-songwriter Blair Shehan faced in the nine years it took to write and release this full-length album, an effort filled with cascading guitars and propelled by ’90s alt-rock rhythm and tone. “We sing like we were young/ Like the worlds had just begun/ Like this song would make you whole.” But Shehan became exhausted with the band’s efforts and the well ran dry. The song continues: “But it all just came undone/ Now the devils had fun/ We just watched it all unfold/ Let the darkness take control, it takes control.” He left his gear behind, moved to Las Vegas to get a day job, then bounced around until he wound up in Florida. There, he finally bought a guitar again, and a series of serendipitous connections got the creative juices flowing. His current mindstate can be heard on A Gentle Reminder’s second track, “Change You”: “Sometimes the bravest thing/ Is just to lay down your arms and sing.” Daytrader and Frame & Canvas also play.
