Mike Watt & The Missingmen

Seminal art-punk bassist/composer Mike Watt’s third punk opera is a different beast than the previous two. Contemplating the Engine Room used Watt’s father’s life in the Navy as a metaphor for the Minutemen’s story; in The Secondman’s Middle Stand, Watt used Dante’s Commedia to describe overcoming a life-threatening illness in 2000. Hyphenated-man doesn’t offer a standard narrative. To paraphrase the songwriter himself, it’s about Watt’s current middle-age state of mind, told as if he took a mirror inside his head and then smashed it into 30 pieces. The 30 short tracks are actually “30 parts of one big tune.” Lite is also on the bill.
