Ben Taylor will never shake being James Taylor and Carly Simon’s son. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, although that isn’t what has garnered acclaim for this inheritor of incredible musical DNA. The bass-y crooner has recorded material for nearly a decade—his most recent, 2012’s Listening, is of his best. His catalog offers his father’s knack for emotive lyrics (see—family comparisons are hard to resist), but where the young Taylor shines is in concert, where he treats shows like they were all filmed for VH1’s Storytellers, bringing witty, thoughtful and provoking back stories to the fore. Amy Lennard and Wes Kirkpatrick start the night off.
