One rainy winter Seattle afternoon, Fleet Foxes, Mayer Hawthorne, Dan Auerbach and one third of the Dap-Kings all drank a little too much Redhook IPA, fooled around, and Pickwick was conceived. Nasty stuff—funk-blues nasty. This six-piece churns out a thick soup o’ soul courtesy of vintage instruments, a rack of reverb pedals and an arsenal of tambourines. OK, the real conception story goes like this: About two years ago, these white kids, raised on indie and jam rock, reworked two Grateful Dead tunes in a soul/blues vibe for a cover night; things clicked and they haven’t looked back. They threw out their old material, and the new direction can be heard on their three EPs—all titled Myths—and a forthcoming early-2013 full-length.
