Old 97’s always seemed like the underdogs of the alt-country movement in the ’90s, with frontrunners Drive-By Truckers, Whiskeytown, The Jayhawks and Uncle Tupelo gaining more traction in album sales and size of venues. But with nine studio albums of finely crafted Texas bar rock behind them, and a few Rhett Miller solo efforts, as well, these rockers have managed to stand the test of time. The band’s latest, the two-volume The Grand Theatre, shows Miller’s more bitchy side, full of sneer and swagger. And we like that a lot. Those Darlins are also on the bill, and Rhett Miller starts things off with a solo set.
