Maybe it’s just me, but the pedantic,
clichéd messages of modern pop-stafarian music—often under the guise of reggae—brings me low more often than it gets me high. There are a few shining contradictions, though, including The Dirty Heads and Matisyahu. Matisyahu bridges the gap between the spiritual—he’s Jewish, not Rastafarian—and the dance-y grooves of the reggae. And the bearded singer just kills it on the human beatbox. Both volumes of Live at Stubb’s (2005; 2011) epitomize the raw power of his live chops.
