Why?, Serengeti, Jel

It's a small wonder how this Midwestern folk-hop three-piece managed to record the first releases in three years, what with Why? leader Yoni Wolf constantly producing flavorful tracks, recently for Serengeti--one of several Anticon labelmates joining them this tour--and his side projects and collaborations too numerous to mention. But the band outdid themselves, regardless. The six-track Sod in the Seed dropped in August, a prelude to the full-length Mumps, etc. to be released in October. The EP offered hip-hop--a common thread among Anticon acts--for the first time in several albums, while Mumps features 13 tracks that shine and spin like a multicolored, multigenre-ed disco ball. “White English” is an extension of the mariachi-infused rhythms Why? contributed to Serengeti, while several tracks received multifarious flourishes, from strings to horns to experimental synths, courtesy musicians from the University of North Texas music school. Serengeti and Jel also play.
