International Peace Gardens Festival

It’s a fairly surreal experience to be taking a relaxing stroll down the paved trail on the banks of the Jordan River and suddenly find yourself exploring gardens that represent 28 nations and feature representations of iconic global sites such as Stonehenge and the Eiffel Tower.

The International Peace Gardens—quietly nestled in the heart of a downtown neighborhood—was created as a monument to friendship and goodwill by celebrating Utah’s cultural diversity. When it was dedicated in 1952, and for several decades afterward, the annual soiree that praised the unique space was quite the place to be seen. According to Steven Lemmon from the Peace Gardens International Academy, “It was a dressy and elaborate event.” The current incarnation of the yearly celebration turns the meditation gardens into a regular family-oriented festival, complete with cultural demonstrations of music and dance, ethnic food offerings and plenty of handcrafted wares for sale.
